Lower School Teachers Present at NCTM Math Conference

Last week Mr. Demianiuk, Ms. Peneda and Ms. Sands presented two separate workshops at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Regional conference in Chicago. The first workshop, led my Ms. Peneda and Ms. Sands, was titled "Not Just a Guess: K-2 Estimation Experiences. They presented a variety of estimation activities, several of which included photos of Cathedral students at work. The presentation highlighted the importance of building early estimation skills. The second presentation was led by Mr. Demianiuk and Ms. Sands, and entitled "Neighborhood Shapes: A K-2 Geometry Exploration." They discussed the importance of visuospatial skills in both everyday life and in mathematics, and shared ten geometry activities aimed at building students in-depth knowledge of the attributes of shapes. About 30 people attended each workshop and 500 teachers attended the conference overall. The three faculty members are looking forward to presenting the same two workshops later this school year at NCTM's Annual Meeting and Exposition, which will take place in Washington, DC from April 25-28. Thousands of teachers attend this national conference, making it the "premier math education event of the year." Congratulations to all three teachers for their hard work and dedication!
