Notes From the 3rd Floor

As we embark on the third trimester and the end of the year begins to loom ever larger, it’s important to remember and highlight the moments, both big and small, that comprise our students’ experiences here at Cathedral. Last Wednesday provided a perfect snapshot: in the span of a few hours, I had the pleasure of observing 8th grade students as historical figures from the American Revolution, and 6th graders participating in a “sentence workshop” in Spanish class.

The 8th grade’s colonial presentations were the capstone of a weeks-long project that asked students to employ a variety of skills, including research, critical thinking and analysis, creativity, and presentation, in order to embody the persona and perspective of their chosen historical figure. Down the hall in 6th grade Spanish, students participated in a workshop where they edited each other's work. Ms. Lora made sure to help them understand that their job was not simply proofread, but to instead provide meaningful feedback to their classmates.  Thus, they not only had to understand their Spanish, they also had to respectfully and thoughtfully interact with their peers in a meaningful way.

In the end, whether it’s a big project or a classroom task, our students are active participants in a supportive community of learners focused on individual development. To view photos of the 8th grade presentation, please view the gallery on the right.
