4th Grade Views the Kerry James Marshall Retrospective at The Met Breuer

4th graders discussed civil rights and urban farming on their visit to the first retrospective of contemporary artist Kerry James Marshall at The Met Breuer, the contemporary wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In science, we build our observation skills through the close examination of objects and the formulation of questions. We also try to develop detailed and precise descriptions, which can lead to scientific insights and discoveries. The art of Kerry James Marshall provided a great opportunity for our students to sharpen their observational skills, discover layers of complex meaning, and uncover issues of social justice, violence, housing, and access to natural resources.

The more we looked at the paintings, the more questions students raised and the more details they discovered. To prepare for looking at Marshall's Black Painting at the museum, students experiemented with mixing pigments derived from minerals to make a variety of black paints. Enjoy photos from the trip in the gallery to the right.
