Lunar New Year at Lower School Assembly

This past Friday, Lower School Assembly celebrated Lunar New Year, which was on Saturday, February 10. To aid in the celebration, the Upper School APIDA Affinity group recorded three videos to share with Lower School students. They shared a reading of The Great Race and also gave tutorials on how to make paper lanterns and origami dragons, in honor of the year of the dragon. 

 

Then, Mr. Donaldson arrived to share his annual Lunar New Year presentation, which he has done for over 15 years during his time at Cathedral. It began with students learning how to say “Happy New Year” in Mandarin which is “Xīn Nián Kuài Lè.” He then explained how oranges were a symbol of wealth and that on Lunar New Year, loud noises, bright lights, and the color red are used to scare off the monster, Nían. His presentation ended as it does every year, with Kindergarten students jumping up and down on bubble wrap to emulate fireworks and scare away Nían.
