Kindergarten and Student Council Celebrate Kindness

The Cathedral School’s Character Education curriculum provides a wonderful opportunity for leadership each month with a focus on the School’s seven core values. The core value for the months of November and December is kindness. At Cathedral, we define kindness as making a conscious effort to be friendly, generous, and compassionate. We are considerate in our actions, mindful of our words, and courteous in our tone of voice so that we can be our best and treat others the way they want to be treated. Character Education includes individual classroom lessons, as well as inter-division activities in which Upper School students teach a core value to a Lower School class.

On Friday, Upper School Student Council members worked with kindergartners to celebrate kindness in a Character Education lesson. Upper School student leaders led a read-aloud of The Kindness Quilt by Elizabeth Wallace. Kindergarteners then drew and wrote about what kindness means to them and put their drawings together to create their own kindness quilt, which was revealed during today’s Thanksgiving Evensong and will subsequently be displayed in the School's library.

Kindergarten through 8th grade students will participate in a variety of lessons and activities over the next two months that highlight kindness. It’s a great time of year to discuss the value of kindness. Some great after-school conversation starters are, "How were you kind at school today?" and, "How did others show kindness to you?"
