Cathedral Students Celebrate Peacock Hutch Unveiling
This past Wednesday, members of the Cathedral Close community celebrated the unveiling of the new peacock hutch on campus. Jim, Harry, and Phil are the third generation of peacocks at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In fact, they were a gift from the 8th grade students at the Cathedral School in 2002. The peacock’s new home was designed by members of Ennead Architects, who also designed the school’s Expansion Project. The structure’s inspiration draws from the Cathedral’s iconic rose window and the peacock’s feathers, and features heated panels to keep the birds warm through the winter months.
To kick off the ceremony, the 8th grade class processed up the driveway with the kindergarten class, blowing toy horns that mimicked the peacock’s calls that often ring out through campus. Bishop Dietsche blessed the hutch and then the crowd, to the delight of all attending. Several media outlets were on hand to cover the event, and even interviewed a pair of Cathedral School students!
