APIDA Affinity Fashion Show and Field Trip to Symphony Space

Last week, Upper School students in Cathedral’s APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) Affinity Group traveled to Symphony Space for a field trip on Wednesday morning, and then hosted their annual Fashion Show on Friday afternoon.

While at Symphony Space, students viewed a live performance featuring stories, dances, music, and voices at the heart of various Asian cultures. This included traditional Chinese dances such as the ribbon dance, classical Indian dance and storytelling, and Japanese festival music featuring taiko drums, flutes, and the koto. The aim of the field trip was to broaden students' perspectives, promote cultural awareness, and inspire a sense of unity in diversity.

Later in the week, students put on the annual APIDA Fashion show. This year’s show featured accessories from different Asian cultures. “Our students worked diligently to showcase a variety of traditional and contemporary accessories from different Asian cultures. From intricate jewelry to stylish footwear, the fashion show highlighted the beauty and significance of these accessories. The event aims not only to entertain but also to educate our community about the cultural heritage and craftsmanship behind these items,” said the APIDA Affinity Group advisors.

The show was a fantastic way for students to share their cultural pride with peers, teachers, and guests in attendance. “I'm immensely proud of the students who walked this year's runway. Their display of bravery and courage in celebrating their culture and heritage was truly inspiring. I was so proud to see each student proudly showcase their heritage. It was an incredible experience!” said Ms. Goco, APIDA Affinity Leader.

Thank you to all the students who participated, and thank you to Ms. Chyau, Ms. Diosa. Ms. Goco, and Ms. Solis for their work in putting together such an incredible event. View photos in the right-hand column.
