The Cougars Win to Break Long Losing Streak
Ben Ruskin
The Cathedral Varsity Soccer team entered there AIPSL league game
against Dwight with a nine game losing streak dating back to last
season. The Cougars were coming off a disappointing 4-0 loss to
Heschel. The Cougars began brightly, thanks to the dribbling ability of
Morgan Gray. After a couple of squandered opportunities, Cathedral
finally got what they deserved. The ball broke to Dana Colihan inside
Dwight’s goalie box, and with great precision, she slammed it past the
goalie to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. The goal seemed to awaken
Dwight. They began to control play, and within minutes, they had
constructed an equalizer. They continued to dominate the play until the
end of the first half. They would have taken the lead if it wasn’t for
the stellar goalkeeping of Lucas Schwartz. The second half began the
way the first half ended. Dwight maneuvered the ball well, and quickly
took the lead. Cathedral responded brilliantly. Morgan stole the ball
in midfield, dribbled through the Dwight defense, and capped off his
run with a hard shot into the corner to tie the game at two. Cathedral
now had all the momentum, and Morgan soon scored again in almost
identical fashion as his previous goal. The Cougars had turned the game
around, and were now leading 3-2. With only minutes remaining, Dwight
desperately played offense. The Cougars almost took advantage on the
counter attack but they couldn’t convert their opportunities. The
Cathedral defense, led by J.C. Lunardini, shut down Dwight in the
closing minutes to earn the Cathedral Cougars Varsity Soccer team their
first victory in almost two years. Final Score: Cathedral 3-2 Dwight!
