Google Classroom FAQ's

List of 6 items.

  • Sign In and Accounts

There are three main Google Account types

You might have a G Suite Account at work. It looks like
    you@yourorganization.com.

Or, you or your student might have a Personal Google Account. Typically, you use a personal Google Account outside of a school setting, like at home.  It looks like
    you@example.com.

At Cathedral we use a Google School Account, also known as a G Suite for Education account. This account is set up by the school IT Administrator. It looks like
    you@yourschool.edu
  • Assignments

Due to privacy laws, parents and guardians can't access Classroom or student assignments.

You can get email summaries if the teacher allows it.

A teacher can invite a parent or guardian to receive email summaries about their student’s work in class.

Email summaries do not include grades, but they do include:

      • Missing work—Work not turned in when the summary was sent
      • Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails)
      • Class activity—Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers.
  • To help your student Sign In

You must have an active internet connection to sign in.

    1. Go to classroom.google.com.
    2. Click Go to Classroom.
    3. Enter the email address for your student’s Classroom account and click Next.
    4. Enter the password and click Next.
If there is a welcome message, review it and click Accept. If your student is using a G Suite for Education account, click I’m A Student.

Note: Users on personal Google Accounts won’t see this option, so make sure your student is on the Cathedral account!

    Click Get Started.

If your student forgot the password, ask the teacher if they have it, and if not, ask the teacher to contact the admin to reset your student’s password.
  • Class Codes and Class Invitations

Your student’s teacher might use Class Codes and Invitations.

A class code consists of 6 or 7 alphanumeric characters. For example, hjhmgrk or g5gdp1. They are typically sent to your student’s school gmail account.

If the class code received does not work, ask the teacher to send a new class code. If the new class code doesn’t work, ask the teacher to contact the school’s IT admin.

If your student accidentally deleted, lost, or forgot the class code before adding themself to a class, ask the teacher to resend the code.

Note: You only use the class code once to join the class. You are then enrolled in the class and you don't need to re-use the code again.

The same goes for Class Invitations. If your student lost the class invitation before adding themself to a class, ask the teacher to resend the class invitation.

Note: You only use the class invitation once to enroll. You don't need to re-use the class invitation again. If your student accidentally unenrolled from a class, ask the teacher to resend a class code or invitation.
  • Posting to your classroom or announcement stream

Please emphasize to your student that posting comments in Google Classroom should be done with discretion. If your student posts and then delete a post, the teacher can still see all deleted posts and comments. If your student has trouble posting comments, the teacher may have turned off posting for that class, inquire with the teacher.
  • Turning In Assignments

If the Turn in Assignment button doesn’t work, or if your student gets an error message when they click Turn in, let the teacher know.

If your student can’t turn in an attachment assigned to them, try these steps:

    • First, to save any work you did in the attachment, copy and paste your work into a blank document.
    • In the Classroom assignment, on the attachment, click Remove, and then click Make a copy.
    • Click the new attachment.
    • Paste any saved work into the new file.
    • Click Turn in.

If you didn't get an attachment your teacher assigned, let your teacher know.
