Fifth Grade Math: The Great Hallway Gridlock

Fifth graders kicked off the school year with a LEGO Maze Engineering Design Challenge, combining hands-on building with teamwork, communication, compromise, creativity, and critical thinking. Working in small groups, students designed and built hallway mazes for their "student," a marble, to navigate, complete with traps and tricky turns along the way.

The challenge gave students a fun, low-stakes opportunity to discover how they work best together and practice navigating disagreements and compromise. These same teams will now dive into a collaborative Unit 1 project on volume, meaning the LEGO Maze Challenge helped lay a strong foundation for successful teamwork in math class.
Keep an eye out for more to come from these super teams of mathematicians!
