7th Grade Visits El Museo del Barrio

One of the goals of the Upper School Spanish curriculum is to introduce the students at Cathedral to the culture and history of Spanish-speaking countries. To fulfill this mission in an interactive and more personal way, students in Ms. Lora's Spanish 7 class went on a field trip last Tuesday to El Museo del Barrio. The community education program at El Museo offers a walking tour of El Barrio (which spans most of East Harlem), learning about Puerto Rican history and the Latino struggle for civil rights and equality in the 1960s and today.

Many of Ms. Lora's 7th graders had never visited this neighborhood, which is less than one mile from the Cathedral grounds. They were eager to learn about its rich culture-- asking thought-provoking questions and sharing their knowledge from classes like Social Studies and Equity & Justice.

Here, you see students with our education guide Carlos, learning about a mural that symbolically represents salsa music, the Taino people, and various world religions.
