Cathedral Participates in Hour of Code

Last week was Computer Science in Education Week, and students at Cathedral in grades 3-8 participated in the “Hour of Code” which introduces students to the basic concepts of computer science using fun and creative project tutorials. More than 180 countries and millions of students participate in the event each year. To enhance the experience for students, a Cathedral Hour of Code website that contained detailed information for Upper and Lower School was created. The activities required zero prior coding experience and students were excited to see their code come to life through various projects.

Ms. Perla Rodriguez, Director of Technology, shared:

“I was impressed by how eager students were to participate and how engaged they became after working on a few activities. Ms. Zapreva shared that some of her students asked, ‘Can we continue doing Hour of Code?’ even after the event had ended. Preconceived ideas were demystified by participating in activities that helped students build confidence in their introduction to coding while also having fun. It was a pleasure to witness how collaboration happened spontaneously as students helped each other when trying to resolve a missing step in their activity. We are thrilled with the results and look forward to continuing to participate in these types of events.”

Upon completion of their work, students were eligible to enter a raffle with prizes that included a 3D pen and a Mars exploration coding game. Winners of the raffle included Colin R. ‘24, Rhys S. ‘28, Jimmy C. ‘23, and Henry B. ‘27. Thank you to Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Solis, and Ms. Zapreva for the work they put in to make the event such a success! View photos of the event in the right-hand column.
