Kwanzaa Celebration

“Kwanzaa ended earlier this month, but the time is always right to honor its principles as a school community,” said Head of School Ms. Corbin in her address to our annual all-school Kwanzaa Celebration on Friday. Students were invited to come to school wearing red, black, and green in honor of the day. The celebration itself included a wide variety of community participation including musical performances, poetic expression, the Libation Statement and tribute to ancestors, presentation of the seven principles of Kwanzaa with complimentary performances, and the lighting of the Kwanzaa candle holder (kinara). Students were invited to enjoy a Kwanzaa activity sheet—which consisted of a coloring page with a kinara and some other Kwanzaa symbols (unity cup, fruit, and corn)—to help engage them in the ceremony. Lower School Science Teacher and Equity and Engagement Coordinator, Ms. "Science" Williams, hosted the event on Zoom and summarized by saying, "The celebration and recognition of people and culture is so vital to who we are as a school."
