Convocation 2021: Celebrating a Connected Community
At Cathedral, Convocation is a special event to mark the advent of a new school year and to celebrate the newest and oldest students in our community. On September 30, 8th grade students and their kindergarten counterparts entered Synod Hall connected by colorful paper chains for Convocation 2021. As Head of School, Erica Corbin, stated in her Convocation remarks, “Having our kindergarteners and 8th graders arrive together is a reminder of beginnings and endings, as our 8th graders spend this year preparing for an academic life beyond the 11 acres of the Close, and our kindergarteners prepare to lead our school into a brand-new 9-year cycle of hope, resilience, laughter, music, and joy. Whether you are saying hello to Cathedral or beginning to say goodbye, you are ready. You are so ready for what will come next.”
The paper chains that were unveiled at Convocation are an ongoing project involving students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni. The chains are made of slips of paper; each one written on by a member of the Cathedral community. For the first phase of this creative collaboration, students were asked to decorate their individual slip of paper with their name and to answer a question about their hopes for the future or what Cathedral means to them. These slips were then collected and formed into chains. Soon, links will be collected from others in the community and formed into longer chains to adorn the halls of The Cathedral School—a tangible representation of unity and a connected community at a time when we are joyfully coming together but still not able to gather fully. These colorful and symbolic paper chains will also be used during other special moments throughout the year.
