Supporting the Transition to High School

Jaclyn Berney, Director of High School Counseling, is hard at work preparing our 8th grade students for the high school application process. This year, students are benefitting from extra in-school time to prepare for admissions season with a new dedicated High School Prep class. They meet in regular sessions throughout the year for additional mentoring, to share ideas and feedback, hone interviewing skills and application essays, and to generally ensure they are well supported in finding their best fit for academic, social, and extra-curricular success after Cathedral.

In addition, the High School Counseling Office coordinates visits with Admissions Directors that take place via Zoom every day either during the Mindfulness/Movement/Clubs period or during EXCEL. Cathedral has 46 NYC independent and boarding school Admission Directors "visiting" us this year as these schools are eager to attract Cathedral students! You can see screenshots from some of these Admissions Director Zoom visits in the right-hand column.

Faculty and staff are also highly engaged in supporting students through the admissions process. Many recently volunteered to serve as mock interviewers to help students practice conversations with Admissions Directors. They used summer questionnaires completed by the students to get to know their interviewees more personally and to make sure students were successfully highlighting their strengths and interests and articulating their hopes and expectations for high school.

The High School Counseling Program is here to ensure that this milestone transition goes smoothly as students consider their options for high school and beyond.
