Easter Evensong

“I can feel the hope and joy in the air. Can’t you?” said Head of School Marsha Nelson as she greeted students and opened Easter Evensong on Friday, April 16. Lower and Upper School students watched the pre-recorded event in separate Zoom sessions. Max S. ‘28 then shared a fun fact when he stated, “Easter is not just one day. Yes. Easter is a day and it is over but Easter is also a season that lasts for 40 days called Eastertide–the season of hope.”

Easter Evensong featured a spectacular performance by a joint ensemble of the Cathedral Choristers, and the Cathedral Choir, Chorale, and Orchestra. Students in Kindergarten to 3rd Grade presented remarks, readings, and prayers. 4th Grade students performed on the recorder. Delphine T. ‘23 played a violin duet with Mr. Collazo on the piano. The Reverend Canon Steven Lee presented a gospel reading, and the homily was delivered by the Dean of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, The Right Reverend Clifton Daniel III.

Dean Daniel spoke on the theme of family. “One thing that makes a family is a shared memory and shared history together. You are an important part of this family here at the Cathedral,” he said to students. “You are young. You’re learning. You’re shaping and forming your vision. Your vision for life and living. I thank you for adding such vitality and vigor to the community.”

In Chaplain Gore’s final blessing, she reinforced the value of growth and community and prayed, “God, give us open doors, open minds, and open hearts–that we might accept, learn, and love everything and everyone whom you have brought into our lives, our family, and our school. Help us to share what we have and to learn from all those around us.”
