A Surprise Recipient of the Z Award

The Z Award is one of Cathedral’s highest honors and is traditionally awarded during Thanksgiving Evensong. The award is named after Steven B. Zaslosky who was a teacher, coach, dean, and business manager at Cathedral from 1978 through 1986. Each year it is presented in honor of his good-natured spirit to someone who embodies Cathedral’s Core Values and Mr. Zaslosky’s legacy of determination, humor, encouragement, and positivity.

During the pre-recorded version of this year’s Thanksgiving Evensong–simultaneously viewed by members of the community on November 20th–Head of School Marsha Nelson announced a surprise recipient. Rather than being awarded to an individual who exemplifies many of our school’s Core Values, Ms. Nelson noted, “The Z Award embodies the values that shape the culture of our community, the values that guide our attitudes and practices, the values that inspire us to be our best selves here, and in the wider world. So, today I proudly present the Z Award to the creative, to the kind, to the collaborative, and to the courageous. Please join me in expressing everlasting gratitude to you, all of you, who kept us together when the outside world was falling apart. It is time to celebrate you, the remarkable members of the Cathedral School community. Today, you are all Mr. Z.”

And with that, Ms. Nelson celebrated all at Cathedral who have been working in concert to prevail through these uncertain times and thrive as a community.
