The Classes of 2019 and 2020 Mentor Current Cathedral Students

As 7th graders begin to look ahead to the high school process and 8th graders prepare for their next chapter beyond Cathedral, Ms. Berney and Mr. Koo from the High School Counseling Office coordinated two virtual mentoring sessions for students discussing the transition from 7th to 8th grade as well as from 8th to 9th. Ms. Berney and Mr. Koo began each meeting with a few prompts. From there, the students confidently took over the conversations.

The 7th-8th grade transition meeting was led by 8th graders Sasha B., Davey B., Cece C., Natalia G., Addy T., and Calum U. Three enthusiastic alumni also joined and helped lead the conversation from the Class of 2019: Zoe Brown (Miss Porter’s), Caroline Peyser (Packer), and Sophia Wyse (Nightingale). 8th and 9th graders spoke about topics such as what type of schools to which they applied (private, boarding, diocesan, public) and what the application process was like for them. They shared firsthand what they enjoyed about it and what challenged them, followed by advice on how to cope with stress and tackle the process efficiently. The session ended with them opening it up for questions from 7th graders.

Cathedral was thrilled to welcome other members of the Class of 2019 to the 8th-9th grade high school transition discussion. The alumni who joined were Lili di Florio (Spence), Aurora Gatch (Marymount), Maxi Glanz (American Studies), Tobias Heller (Packer), Hara Schwartz (Spence), and Cristina Toro (Spence). Each alumnus spoke about their experience, including how they became involved their new communities, made new friends, and stayed connected to their Cathedral classmates. Additionally, they shared advice for 8th graders and divided into breakout rooms so they could ask them questions.

It is wonderful to see current 8th graders and our 2019 alumni step up and look out for each other.
