State of the School

Ms. Nelson had much to report in last week’s State of the School address. This annual tradition is an opportunity for not only Ms. Nelson, but also Mr. Maas, COO/CFO, and Mr. Bermont, Board President, to address the Cathedral community.

It’s an exciting time to be a part of this community as was evident by Mr. Bermont’s announcement that Innovate. Collaborate. Excel: The Cathedral School Campaign surpassed its $6 million goal. It has been a thrill seeing students activate the Expansion spaces this school year. Mr. Bermont expressed his deep gratitude to those who have supported the effort.

These spaces were on full display during the NYSAIS Accreditation visit, the success of which Ms. Nelson spoke about in her address. Ms. Nelson also invited 7th and 8th graders—Davey B., Annabelle G., Ben L., Jesse P., and Sage V. to speak about their meeting with the Visiting Committee. They commented that while it was an opportunity to illustrate all the great things about Cathedral, they most enjoyed learning about one another’s activities and passions.

Ms. Nelson reported that Ms. Turley, Visiting Committee Chair, had wonderful things to say about The Cathedral School including, “Your hearts would have swelled with pride to hear [the students] describe the importance of the core values.” Ms. Nelson could not imagine a more meaningful endorsement by the Committee.

During the address, Ms. Nelson reviewed many of the exciting things taking place in the classroom—the corn harvest in 1st grade, the 5th grade’s work with data literacy, media literacy projects in 4th, and student-led sustainability efforts throughout the grades—to name a few.
