School Garden Crawl

What can you grow in a school garden? Should everything in the garden be edible? What can students learn by growing plants? These were all questions Ms. Williams and Ms. Zapreva had as they embarked on a Brooklyn School Garden Crawl on a Saturday this fall. They visited four different gardens in Park Slope and Sunset Park, where they met other educators with a passion for growing, tasted herbs, and saw some innovative growing systems. They gained inspiration about how to grow both the new hydroponics garden in the Kindergarten Center and the Terrace Garden near our Science Labs. They also learned what kinds of produce they can grow, and how to build a pollinator garden. Ms. Williams and Ms. Zapreva are planning on having their students plant different vegetables and fruits throughout the year.
