Cathedral Alumnus Visits Equity & Justice Class

Cathedral alumnus Weston Delacey '15 came back to campus this past Friday to present to the 5th grade Equity & Justice class. Weston, a junior at LREI, traveled to Tuscon, Arizona this spring with a group of classmates as part of a service learning trip focusing on immigration and identity intersection. The group spoke with immigrant laborers, visited an immigration detention center, and learned from activists fighting for the rights of migrant workers. He and other students crafted a 5-minute documentary about the hard choices people make when they leave Central and South America to come to The United States. He spoke of the challenges of day laborers, parents who must leave their children, detention camps, and personal stories of those who work for ICE. Most importantly, he reminded students of the reciprocal learning that must take place in every service-learning opportunity. Volunteerism should not be simply an event that provides warm and fuzzy feelings for those doing “service.” We must always learn as we serve. Cathedral students were eager to learn more about the details of the trip and the lessons Weston and his classmates learned. It was a pleasure learning how one alumnus has continued to develop his committment to service after graduating from Cathedral.
