Hill Country Barbecue

Thursday, May 16, 7 - 10 P.M.

Inspired by our seven Core Values, the mission of The Cathedral School is brought to life by our curricular and co-curricular programs, where students are taught to ask questions, think critically, and challenge assumptions—especially pertaining to the recognition and appreciation of difference. In this spirit, The Cathedral School is proud to host an annual event, the Absalom Jones Benefit for Financial Aid, that reinforces our community’s commitment to equity, justice, and inclusion.

All proceeds from the Absalom Jones Benefit directly support financial aid, which is granted to more than 40% of our student body. Unmatched by our independent school peers, this dedication contributes to the vibrance and unique dynamism of our Cathedral School community, where the backgrounds, cultures, and traditions of our students, families, faculty, staff, and friends are joyfully celebrated each and every day.

What to expect at the Benefit

The Absalom Jones Benefit is a fun and festive gathering that celebrates the mission of The Cathedral School and raises money for our robust financial aid program. The evening will feature a cocktail reception with food, music, dancing, and a brief program highlighting the unique nature of our community, followed by our traditional Call From The Heart—an opportunity for guests and friends of Cathedral to support, via donations of any size, our shared mission of equity, justice, and inclusion.

We are deeply grateful for the consideration and support of our community, whose deep-seated dedication enriches the social, emotional, and academic growth of all Cathedral School students.

Who was Absalom Jones?
Absalom Jones was an abolitionist, community organizer, and clergyman who was born into slavery in 1746, taught himself to read, purchased his wife’s freedom, and then purchased his own in 1783. He later founded the Free African Society with Richard Allen and went on to become the first Black priest ordained in the Episcopal Church. Absalom Jones’s lifelong work denouncing slavery and oppression serves as an inspiration for The Cathedral School’s ongoing commitment to equity, justice, and inclusion.

What is Call from the Heart?
Call From The Heart invites community members to make gifts in support of Financial Aid at The Cathedral School. As the Call is made, the love we have for Cathedral is channeled into donations, given at all levels, directly supporting this robust financial aid program and reinforcing our shared commitment to welcoming students and families of all backgrounds.
