3rd Grade Art in St. Columba Chapel

An art project created by 3rd grade students can currently be found on display in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine’s St. Columba Chapel. The project was inspired by the students' recent study of the life and art of Keith Haring. They discussed his life, his philosophy as an artist, and the impact he had on children and the world.

To create their projects, 3rd graders studied the human skeleton and joints of the body, and posed for each other in class to make drawings from observation. Students then took photographs of different poses and used them to incorporate more than one pose into their final project. They were able to create anything they wished with colored ink, and they were able to invent their own images or attempt to imitate Haring’s style. Their work can be seen in the album in the right-hand column.

The Haring project coincides with the Cathedral’s Iconic Pride Celebration throughout the month of June. If you are interested in joining this month’s programming, all are welcome to attend two upcoming events in the Cathedral School Library. We will be hosting an all-ages talk about LGBTQIA+ history and the power of language with Chloe O. Davis, author of The Queens’ English: Young Readers Edition; Darcy Connors, Executive Director of SAGEServes at SAGE USA, supporting LGBTQ+ Elders; and Head of School Erica Corbin, followed by a Sunset Silent Disco on Monday, June 10, and then Drag Story Hour before the Pride Family Picnic on Saturday, June 23. To register for these events and view additional Pride programming at the Cathedral, please click here. We can’t wait to see you there!
