Overview
The Cathedral School provides a comprehensive physical education curriculum as well as an extensive interscholastic Athletics Program. While physical education classes are a part of the school day for all students, Upper School students may choose to participate in the competitive Athletics Program with games and practices after school during the fall, winter, and spring seasons.

The physical education curriculum focuses on developing motor skills, confidence, and cooperation, in addition to a healthy attitude toward physical fitness and good habits to last a lifetime. Students are gradually introduced to competitive sports by developing both the skills necessary to participate in various sports and an understanding of rules and strategies. In addition to taking advantage of nearby parks and outdoor space on The Cathedral’s grounds, our students utilize two gymnasiums, the “Crypt Gym,” under the Cathedral, and a gym in the school building. Lower School students attend physical education class four days a week, three in kindergarten, while Upper School students enjoy extended P.E. periods twice a week.

The Athletics Program offers a full range of fall, winter, and spring sports teams for students in the Upper School (grades 5-8): soccer, volleyball, and cross country in the fall; basketball in the winter; and softball, baseball, and track in the spring. The mission of the Athletics Program is to assist and encourage the development of character and athletic ability of our student athletes. Our approach includes challenging students mentally and physically, and works hand and hand with the school’s philosophy of educating the whole child. Our goal is to provide an environment where all students can take risks and strive to be the best they can be. Whether they are on a champion team, or a team that wins some and loses some, our student athletes embody the qualities necessary for a positive athletic experience: Commitment, Positive Attitude, Respect, Excellence, and Integrity.
