Overview
Every school-day morning, 260 children stroll and scamper down the Cathedral close - past flower gardens, stands of trees, even peacocks - heading for another day at The Cathedral School.

The Cathedral School is an independent, coeducational school for children in kindergarten through eighth grade. Our talented faculty, administration, and staff are deeply committed to excellence in education -- to the intellectual, social, emotional, and moral development of each child and of the community as a whole.

Cathedral's rigorous academic program is both traditional and innovative. The traditional approach means that, from their earliest years at the school, students are taught how to write clearly, read fluently, and compute basic math functions efficiently. The students' studies of literature, science, history, technology, and world languages are fundamental to their Cathedral education. Their experiences are deepened through music, the visual arts, physical education, field trips designed to enhance the curriculum, and performance opportunities for every grade level.

While Cathedral's emphasis on fundamental skills denotes a traditional approach, innovative teaching methods ensure full engagement and participation from all students. At Cathedral, teachers want to hear from their students - whether it is to argue an idea or ask a question. Such student involvement is ensured by Cathedral's small class size.

The focus at Cathedral is on an intellectually rigorous education, but Cathedral students thrive because they are a part of a truly friendly place - a place where everyone knows your name and probably even the names of your siblings and pets. From the very start, kindergarten students are brought into the community not just by the adults, but through experiences with the older students, such as 8th grade buddies for All-School Celebrations; these experiences tap into the older students' desire for leadership, as well as the younger students' positive responses to kids helping kids. Cathedral students have a strong sense of community, loyalty, and tradition - a sense of belonging to a school that inspires them academically, encourages them morally, and rewards them with wonderful friends, devoted teachers, an inspiring location . . . and peacocks.
