Madeleine L’Engle Celebration

Last Tuesday, Cathedral hosted a celebration of Madeleine L’Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time and many other fantastic novels. All community members were welcome to attend and Charlotte Jones Voiklis, the granddaughter of Madeleine L’Engle, was in attendance as well. Ms. Jones Voiklis is the co-author of A Book, Too, Can Be a Star: The Story of Madeleine L’Engle and the Making of a Wrinkle in Time along with Jennifer Adams. Ms. L’Engle was a valued member of the Close community for many years as the librarian for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in the Diocesan House. The celebration also coincided with Madeleine L’Engle’s 105th birthday and those in attendance were able to enjoy cake as part of the festivities.

The event began with a community reading of A Book, Too, Can Be a Star: The Story of Madeleine L’Engle and the Making of a Wrinkle in Time led by Ms. Roberts. After that, students were able to choose from a wide selection of Ms. L’Engle’s books to bring home with them, and they were even able to go on a tour–led by Ms. Jones Voiklis–of the library that Madeleine L’Engle curated and worked in for so many years. It was an honor to celebrate her legacy in such a special way. View photos from the celebration in the right-hand column.
