Author Rhoda Trooboff Reads to the Lower School 2/23/2007 On Friday, February 23, our Lower School Assembly hosted a guest speaker. Rhoda Trooboff is an author and English teacher at The Cathedral School in Washington, D.C. She came to The Cathedral School to meet with our students and talk about her book, “Ben, the Bells and the Peacocks.” In addition to being a great story, Ms. Trooboff’s book was exciting for our students because the story takes place on the Close of the Cathedral and its neighboring streets. “Ben, the Bells and the Peacock” was inspired by Ms. Trooboff’s grandson, Ben, who lived on 109th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. When he was a baby, Ben’s parents and grandparents would take him in his stroller on walks up Amsterdam to the gardens on the Close. When Ben and his parents moved to North Carolina, Ms. Trooboff decided to write her story so her grandson could remember the special times they shared together around the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. In Ms. Trooboff’s book, Grandmother takes baby Ben for a stroll where he hears the bells of the Cathedral, sees the doves and peacocks who live on the Close, and experiences the sights and sounds of Amsterdam Avenue. Our students loved Ms. Trooboff’s story and its beautiful illustrations by her friend Cecile Bucher, and they also enjoyed a visit from her storytelling assistant, a peacock puppet named Tarish. “Ben, the Bells and the Peacocks” is published by Tenley Circle Press in Washington, D.C. Ms. Trooboff, Tarish, and Ben are welcome to return to the Close and The Cathedral School any time! |
